Signal Orange

Signal Orange (L20E) is the definitive orange of the early air-cooled Porsche era — a fully saturated, non-metallic orange of pure intensity and no dilution, positioned to be seen from a distance and impossible to mistake at speed. It sits in the middle of the orange spectrum, warmer than the yellow-touched Gulf Orange and cooler and less red than Tangerine, achieving a balance of true orange that Porsche used for both road cars and as a reference to the safety-visibility tradition of automotive signal colors. Available on the 911 from 1970 through 1975 and on the 914 from 1970 through 1974, it was one of the signature colors of the mid-engine sports car's entire production run and one of the most photographed 911 colors of the long-hood era. Its presence on both the 911 and 914 simultaneously confirmed it as one of the few colors genuinely shared between the two models. The 914 assembled at the Karmann factory in Osnabrück retained Signal Orange across its four consecutive model years as a standard catalog color. The color was briefly revived on the 911 for 2018. On period 911s and 914s it represents one of the most prized of all early-1970s Porsche finishes.
